A determined teacher will complete his 100 day challenge to run 10kms a day for Catching Lives on Saturday, July 6.
Nick Rendall started his 10km a day for 100 days from March 29 in memory of Catching Lives supporter Tracy Claridge.
Nick, who took on the challenge as part of Benenden School’s ‘100 acts of kindness’ initiative, said: “It’s a little unbelievable to be completing the challenge. When I set out there were points when the length and distance of the challenge became clear and it was daunting. I am a little relieved to have got to the end and actually feeling pretty good.”
In order to fit in his duties as a teacher, Nick undertook his 10km runs at 5.30am on weekdays.
He added: “The routine is something I appreciated, it doesn’t take much thinking if you prepare everything ready to go in the morning.
However the repetition has been the biggest challenge, if you read any guides to running, the rest days are an important part of looking after yourself. The challenge is not having one for over three months. This has seen me slow down to ensure I didn’t over extend – and also keeping free from injury has been a big consideration – one slight trip could have been the end of the challenge.”
Nick has watched the seasons change and run in all weather since March. On some days, he has been joined by friends. He logged all the runs on his Instagram account.
He said: “I almost can’t believe I have managed it – March feels like a long time ago when I began and watching the skies brighten as the dawns moved earlier was memorable. I trained through January and February and the contrast between running in the light of head torch through fog and rain in the pre-dawn light to running the bright sun of June was refreshing and very welcome.”
Nick initially set out to raise £2,000 and at time of publication is nearly at his target.
He said: Catching Lives is a small charity which does so much. Thank you for the suppor. I have had some much encouragement almost everyday and it has really helped.
“I am going to celebrate by having a rest day. And maybe a lie in.”
