We're recruiting for our Winter Shelter
Our September update begins with good news: we’re recruiting a Coordinator (full time, fixed term) for our winter shelter, which will run in churches across Canterbury. That’s right, our overnight community shelter will go ahead this Winter! We’ll share more details and how you can support the Canterbury Community Shelter soon, but first we need to recruit for this key role.
The Shelter Coordinator is pivotal to the success of the Canterbury Community Shelter. Bridging the day and evening shifts, they will be responsible for practical aspects of Shelter delivery, as well as coordinating support and move-on for guests. Supported by experienced managers, and working closely with the wider team, this is an excellent opportunity for someone to develop skills and experience in a homelessness charity with strong community connections.
Are you or someone you know our Shelter Coordinator? Visit our website to download the job pack.
Thanks to a grant from the South East School of Public Health, we’re also recruiting for two Peer Support Workers (part time, fixed term) with lived experience of using homelessness or other support services. Click here for more details.
New oven and shelving in Catching Lives’ kitchen
The Catching Lives kitchen has been given an update with a new oven and larder shelving, thanks to a grant from the Morrisons Foundation.
Tasmin Maitland, Chief Executive of Catching Lives, said: “As an independent charity, community support is vital to help us keep going. We are very grateful for the grant from the Morrisons Foundation, which meant we could get a new oven and new larder shelving. Our kitchen volunteers cook a hot, nutritious two-course lunch every day for our clients. The new oven and shelving are a welcome update, making our kitchen space brighter and more efficient.”
We’re still collecting Harvest Festival donations. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. For a list of the items we need, visit our website.
Meet our new colleague
This week, we have welcomed a new member to the team. Georgia Jefferson has joined us as Fundraising Officer, so we’ve given our ‘Meet The Volunteers’ section a twist and this month it’s ‘Meet our new colleague’.
Tell us about your role:
I am excited to be joining the team as their new Fundraising Officer, responsible for raising an income to ensure that the invaluable services provided at Catching Lives can continue.
Why did you choose to work at Catching Lives?:
Living and working in the Canterbury area, it is impossible not to notice the impact of Catching Lives and the work that it does to support vulnerable people within our community. The need for this type of support is only increasing, and I am grateful to be a part of this incredible organisation, ensuring that this mission can continue to assist those who need it.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role?
I am looking forward to being a part of such a fantastic team, working for a cause that I am passionate about.
Outside of Catching Lives, how do you like to spend your time?
Usually in the kitchen! I love to cook and experiment with new recipes from all different cuisines, often using my family as guinea pigs. I also love to read, so I will definitely be paying regular visits to the Catching Lives bookshop!
What is your previous line of work/study?
I've done a bit of everything! Most recently, I finished my Masters degree in International Social Policy, but before that I worked as an English teacher in a primary school in Spain for a couple of years, which was an amazing experience!
What are your passions and interests?
I love learning! Whether it's something more creative like knitting, or learning the ins and outs of whatever takes my interest at the time, I always like to have something on the go.
