Catching Lives Latest News: April 2024

Denise launches ‘7 for 70’ fundraiser

This is your April update from Catching Lives. This month, one of our supporters, Denise Smith, has launched a ‘7 for 70’ fundraising campaign. The street pastor, from Broomfield, Herne Bay, is hoping to raise £7,000 towards our Winter Shelter, by taking on seven things she’s never done before to celebrate turning 70 in July. Denise and a team of fundraisers kicked off the challenges by scaling a climbing wall on Friday, 19 April and have already raised more than £1,500. You can read more on our website and sponsor Denise via her JustGiving page.

Well done to Matt Gillett, who completed his sponsored walk from Canterbury to Ramsgate in eight hours on 1 April and smashed his fundraising target. Meanwhile, Nick Rendall is more than a quarter of the way through his ‘10kms for 100 days’ challenge, which he started on 29 March. You can follow his progress via Instagram and sponsor him via JustGiving.

We really appreciate our fundraisers who take on challenges to raise money for us. Please do get in touch if you’d like to organise a sponsored event!

Welcoming Rosie Bartlett to the team

Catching Lives has welcomed a new member to our staff team this month. Rosie Bartlett has started as the new Volunteer Coordinator.

Rosie says: “Having worked in international disaster relief for five years, I moved back to the UK permanently and wanted to re-shift my focus in serving the communities in which I lived and grew up in. For me, working for a charity that supports people experiencing homelessness seemed like a natural transition, due to overlapping themes. It was also really important to me to stay working for small independent charities where there is a real sense of team work and community, and I feel I have found this with Catching Lives.”

The Volunteer Coordinator role is partly funded by a grant from Philip and Connie Phillips Foundation – thank you to them for supporting us again this year!

Winter Appeal update

You may have noticed our Winter Appeal JustGiving page has now closed and we are now taking donations via our main JustGiving page.

We wanted to raise £50,000 by 31 March and our total raised was £51,250, which is brilliant news. Thank you everyone who supported us.

Upcoming events

The Artichoke in Chartham is holding a quiz on Thursday, 9 May, with all money raised going to Catching Lives. Entry is £3 per person and tables of up to six players can be booked by calling Holly on 01227 738316 or Thomas on 07702 277779.

Catching Lives will be at Canterbury Chamber Choir’s concert at St Peter’s Methodist Church on Saturday, 18 May, at 6.30pm. Tickets for £10 are available here. Sales of refreshment and the retiring collection will be in aid of Catching Lives.

Thank you!

In April, we received a massive donation of more than £13,800 raised by Simon Langton Girls School, through events including their sponsored walk. What an amazing effort – thank you to staff and pupils at SLGS! Thank you to Angela Stafford and everyone who raised money at a Charity Community Concert at Old Wives Lees Village Hall. Thank you everyone who has supported us and our clients – through activities, volunteering, fundraising and donating items. We keep our list of the items we need regularly updated on our website if you would like to support us.

If you’d like more regular updates, please do keep an eye on our website, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for more updates until we write to you again in May.
