A two day event called ‘Raise the Roof’ took place on 20th and 21st July in the Dane John Gardens, with over 2000 people attending on each day. Please see below for pictures from the day. The headliners included Toploader, Heather Small, Dick and Dom, CBeebies star: Mr Bloom, UK Dance group Booty Luv, Abba Gold, Wannabe (Spice Girls Tribute), and many more.
There was also a range of family-friendly fun things to do, including a nerf arena, bubble football, skateboarding, performance workshops provided by the Pauline Quirke Academy, circus skills tutorials, and arts and crafts provided by Future Foundry
Also onsite was a superb offering of food stalls, including Lily’s Bistro (Palace St, Canterbury), and drinks including craft ales, gin and prosecco. The idea for the event came from Louise Jones-Roberts, local councillor and owner of Club Chemistry and Tokyo Tea Rooms.Mark Cowland, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Catching Lives says:
“Homelessness has an impact on our whole community and on Saturday and Sunday it was wonderful to see the community of Canterbury come together to show their support. I’d like to say a big thank you to Louise and her team at Distinctive Bars, all the staff and volunteers at Catching Lives and all of the organisations and artists that were involved over the 2 days for working together to put on this superb event, and we were delighted and grateful to work alongside everyone involved.
The festival had something for everybody and it was wonderful to see so many families having a good time, whilst also helping us to raise some much needed funds for our building. We hope this’ll be the start of something that Canterbury can look forward to every year. It has certainly made its mark – and I believe we truly ‘Raised the Roof’ for the City’s homeless”.-

“We came along to Raise the Roof today. It was a really great day. All the staff were friendly and the food was great too. There were lots of activities for the children and the atmosphere felt safe and looked after and clean. Plenty of security to make sure all was safe which is what I like to see at a family event. Due to this feedback, and with a shortage of family friendly events of this nature in Canterbury, we are looking to ensure we can put on something again next year so please stay tuned for more details.
